Weight Room Introduction

The students are starting a brand new unit at Sperreng. This year we are fortunate enough to have a new weight room at Sperreng which will allow us to teach weight training in PE. There are unique concerns regarding weight training when dealing with middle school age children that is why the middle school unit will look much different than what one might see at the high school. The PE weight lifting unit will focus on the following items.

-Terminology such as aerobic v. anaerobic, free weights vs. machine weights and the benefits of each)

-Safety such as proper spotting techniques and why it is important to have the right attitude in the weight room

-Technique  Technique Technique! We will emphasize proper lifting technique as the best way to get stronger, as opposed to amount of weight one lifts to get bigger.

-The Big Picture or how the weight room fits into overall health and what that means for the students as they get into high school.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact me so we can discuss them. We are excited about this great opportunity for the students to learn new concepts and skills regarding health and fitness.

Pickleball?

This week the students are playing a game called Pickleball. The best way to describe the game would be to say it is a cross between tennis and ping-pong. It was developed in the 1965 by three U. S. Congressmen. It is a great game to develop hand-eye coordination. The students really seem to be enjoying the game, we will have a bracketed tournament on Thursday so check back to see the winners.

GOAL!!!!!

Skill development and pool play are over and today Coach Hilton's classes are competing in the finals of our soccer tournament. They guys are competing well and displaying great sportsmanship. I will post the picture of the winning team for the soccer tournament each hour so check back for updates. So far there have been some great games, three out of my first four hours needed goal kicks to determine the winner! Please remember we will be swimming all next week, I told the students to bring in their swim suit, towels and goggles if desired this week.
