Health Week
Sorry for the delay in updates, my wife and I welcomed our second child and I have been out/scattered the last two weeks. This week my classes are back in the health room for health cycle 2. For the next two weeks we will be learning about diseases and stress. Pictured below you see one of my classes hard at work on their disease learning menu. The assignment and directions can be found on my website if you have any questions. There will be a lot of possible points for this health cycle so be sure that your child is getting their assignments turned in on-time. Contact me if you have any questions and as always...

Swimming at Sperreng
Our swimming unit has started here at Sperreng and the students seem very excited to be in the pool. We started off working on four different swim strokes; freestyle, back, breast and butterfly. We progressed through the steps of each stroke and I have seem some tremendous improvement in a lot of our swimmers. For fun, we introduced Water Polo and Waboba Ball and they seem to be fan favorites. Even those students who struggle with swimming have been able to participate in our warm-ups and games. Please enjoy some of the pictures of students in action.
We will have one more two-week swimming unit at the end of January and that unit will focus on some water-skills and aiding swimmers in distress. As always if you have any questions please don't hesitate to contact me.

It's PickleBall Time!!!
The last two weeks students at Sperreng have taken up racket sports. Last week we played badminton and learned just how hard it is to hit a birdie. We learned the forehand, backhand and lob stroke and then utilized those strokes in various games. This week the boys have discovered the awesome sport of PickleBall! PickleBall is one of the fastest growing sports in the world that was invented by two dads who were bored with their kids and their dog. Pickles the dog kept getting the ball, hence the name PickleBall. Students here have really taken to PickleBall, which is comparable to giant ping-pong. Enjoy the pictures below of students playing PickleBall!!

First Week in Health
This week marks the first week in the health classroom for the 6th graders. We started with a lively discussion about who is responsible for their health. Some said they were, while others said it was the parents and a few believed it to be the schools' responsibility. The picture below shows the activity we did to go along with that discussion. The rest of the week we learned about the skeletal, muscular, respiratory and digestive systems. The students sure have learned a lot about their bodies and how they function, week two should wow them even more!

20 Minute Standard
One of the characteristics of an aerobic work out is that it lasts at least twenty minutes. A standard way this is measured in middle school and high school PE is by running continuously for twenty minutes. Recently, my students began an exercise plan that will allow them to build up to running for this amount of time. Some examples of these workouts are running at a conversational pace for 60 seconds, then walking for 60 seconds, for ten minutes. We will increase the intensity of these types of workouts in an effort to help every student achieve the goal of running for twenty minutes without stopping. I would encourage everyone to have their student be active at some point outside of school weather it be walking or running for at least ten minutes as this will help you student achieve this goal. Feel free to let me know if you have any questions.

Flag Football Tournament
This week marks the start of our flag football tournament! Last week the 6th graders worked on throwing and catching skills, created a playbook and then were able to practice those plays against a live defense. Each student will be tested over the throwing and catching skills we learned last week in what we call Skills Based Grading (SBG). That testing starts on Wednesday/Thursday of this week.
This week each team will play every other team (round robin) and then be seeded into our tournament bracket. At the end of the week each hour will have one flag football champion!!!!!
You can check on the progress of our tournament by clicking on the links below that correspond to the hour your son has PE.

Large Gym Games and Fitness Workouts!!!
In our first "normal" week of PE the 6th grade boys have been learning a variety of different large gym games. From Throwton to Xtreme 4Square, these boys have learned a lot this week and have had fun doing it!
We start every class with a 4-7 minute fitness warm-up that gets the kids sweating and working right away. These warm-ups should go a long way in getting every student to improve their physical fitness scores throughout the course of the year.
Enjoy the pictures below, have a great Labor Day weekend and as always please contact us with any questions.

Fitness Testing Week!!!
Throughout the week the whole Physical Education department has been busy fitness testing all of the students to create a baseline of their physical fitness. We then use that data to help plan our lessons so we can maximize their strengths and help develop the areas they struggle in. The fitness tests we administer are:
Pacer
Mile
Sit and Reach
Pull-Ups/Flexed Arm Hang
Sit-Ups
Plank
Shuttle Run
Shoulder Stretch
Each fitness test has a green zone score and a gold zone score to aim for and our top scores end up on our record board in the large gym! If a student scores in the green/gold zone for a test their name goes on a giant banner in the large gym and if they score in those zones for EVERY test, they go on yet another banner! All the students did great and we are looking forward to strengthening them each and every day!
