Whats a GLE? It's not a TV show....

I wanted to take a moment to communicate the educational goals of health. For each unit, the state of Missouri had set what are called grade level expectations or gle's.   The state has gle's for every subject in every grade, they help to ensure that students are progressing in their understanding of a subject.  In my health class students are pre and post tested to ensure they understand the gle for each unit and to determine how far they have progressed in their understanding of a unit. All activities for each unit are designed to support this effort.  For example of the the gle's for the unit of consumer health and safety is identify health-related careers. Today we are exploring what types of services various medical professionals provide. Check back to see how we are addressing gle's going forward in health class.

Its Alive!!!

During a lesson in 6th hour on the gle, understand the effect of the collaboration of individuals, communities and government can have on the health of a community, while explaining what the purpose of a district was i.e. Lindbergh school district and Mehlville fire protection district. If you look you can see a representation of the Mississippi river, St Louis city and St. Louis county you can even see Lindbergh school district and Mehlville fire protection district. The students said it looked like a face so I added an eye and hair.  Alex asked if he could draw a body and I told him as long as it fit in with the gle. Part of what we discussed with the gle was community recycling so here he is. It is fun to see how students can conceptualize information and I was take the opportunity to reinforce the gle.

Video Games in Health?

One of the tool we use in health to master the grade level expectations is a website called studystack. Studystack allows me to make games with the terms and essential concepts for class. here is a game from the nutrition unit. Feel free to play, have fun...and learn.

Welcome Back for 2014 and Heat Information

I hope everyone is settling in well with the new school year. Coach and I are very excited to get back into the swing of things with the guys. We recently completed fitness testing and will be posting some information about that soon. We wanted to let you know what kind of precautions we are taking regarding heat. We have a cooling station with a tent shelter and ice water towels to cool off with in addition to ice water and allowing the students to go into the locker room to get a drink. We use the following chart to determine what activities we can do outside when there is excessive heat:

Heat index of 80-90 degrees:  Classes may occur with scheduled water breaks.

Heat index of 90-100 degrees:  Classes will continue with increased water breaks, limited conditioning, and time in shaded areas with cool down stations.

Heat index of 100-105 degrees:  Classes moved to cooler time of the day (morning or evening hours if possible), very limited to no conditioning, with frequent water breaks and time in shaded areas with cool down stations.

Heat index of 105 degrees or above:  Classes will be moved inside with regular water breaks.  (If in a non-air conditioned facility, there will be an increased frequency of water breaks.)

If you have any questions please feel free to contact us.

Thank You J Robinson

J Robinson is the head coach of the University of Minnesota wrestling team which is one of the best in the nation year in and year out. In PE, before we get into our activity most days we will do some kind of work out. These workouts are targeted at improving the guys fitness testing scores.  One of the workouts we do are called JRobs named for coach Robinson, the workout is quick, intense and does a great job of improving shuttle times as well as helping with overall body strength. The guys continue to do a great job and as always feel free to let me know if you have any questions comments or concerns.
