Healthy Heart

Today, coach Hilton's class discussed what it means to have a healthy heart. Students learned how to take their resting heart rate and what that number means. Later we discussed what maximum heart rate is and what target heart is. The students did a ten minute run and took their heart rate to see if they were exercising in their target heart rate zone. As a side note the average resting heart rate of my 70 12 year olds was 74 bpm, the normal range is 70 to 80 bpm.

Mr. Walker Gets in on the Action

In a show of amazing speed and grace, Mr. Walker  demonstrated his skating skills on Friday. The students were thrilled to skate with Mr. Walker. Sorry about the tilted picture but it was too good not to share.

Conga Time!!

Coach Wilder and coach Hilton's 4th hours get together for a HUGE conga line.

Last day of Skating

Coach Hilton's and coach Wilder's class finished skating today. Skating was a great way to work on improving balance and coordination. It was very exciting to see the students make progress with their skating ability. Mike in 2nd hour said "this is where I learned how to skate". Coach Wilder's class will swim next week and coach Hilton's class will swim the first week of April (the week we get back from spring break).

3rd Quarter Pacer Testing

Today the classes will be completing their third quarter pacer testing. The 20 meter pacer test or the Fitnessgram Pacer Test is a Multi-stage aerobic capacity test that slowly gets more difficult as it continues every five laps, or one level. It gets faster every minute and is 247 laps long. The second time you fail to complete a lap, your test is over.

The students did and are doing a great job pushing themselves to excel. they are trying to reach the following standards:

Healthy Zone                          Presidential (top 85% in Nation)             Green (top 50% in Nation)
11yo = 23-42                                                47                                                          37
12yo = 32-52                                                50                                                          40

14yo = 41-63                                                59                                                          49

If you get a chance ask you son how he did today. The high score for my 6th graders is 97. The high score for my 8th graders is 115! The high score for my 7th graders 84.

Protecting your Territory!!

Today the guys played a great strategy game called territory. Four teams attempt to reclaim there treasure (beanbags) before the other teams are able to. As an added element teams could use cannon balls (gopher balls) to temporarily sizable their opponents. It's a great team stratagem game and a great cardio work out.
